New VoIP Encryption Software Designed

11:19 pm on July 28, 2005 | Category: VoIP, Web Services

Phil Zimmermann, a major player in the invention of desktop encryption, introduced his new telephony-oriented encryption software concept at this week’s Black Hat security event in Las Vegas. This new open source software, thus far known simply as “Zfone”, is designed to prevent snooping into VoIP conversations, especially across broadband links.

It uses a Diffie-Hellman-based public key design, which is session based, meaning that both VoIP clients would have to run the program in order to create a secure link. To use the software, both callers are asked to exchange a short series of digits with one another. If the sets of digits don’t completely match, then a third party has likely intercepted the call.

Although no formal timeline for the release of this product has been set out, Zimmermann says that he has already created the program, and is discussing financing for further development with potential investors.
