Yahoo Improves Mobile Phone Search Functions
1:01 pm on July 7, 2005 | Category: Web ServicesYahoo! Inc. is enhancing their mobile search utility, expanding it across a number of additional mobile devices, and lanching numerous new features. The new services are available starting today (July 7) with major wireless carriers across the United States.
Yahoo’s search functions are designed to assist customers in quickly finding the information they need, while on the go. It uses shortcuts to help users eaily find the information they want and need when on the go.
The launch of Yahoo SMS Search gives consumers yet another way to quickly use their phone to search for needed information. Shortcuts available at launch include local information, news, weather, stock quotes, daily horoscopes, dictionary definitions, WiFi hotspot finder, and zip and area code lookup.
The other new service, Yahoo Search on Mobile, gives access to search results powered by Yahoo Search Technology through WAP enabled mobile phones. Previously, full Web search was available only on HTML-capable mobile devices, however, today’s launch expands the reach across a number of additional WAP 2.0 (xhtml) enabled handsets by translating entire Web pages to for viewing on consumers’ phones.

4INFO (shortcode 44636) has a similar text message offering, but provides several additional services that Yahoo! does not: sports scores (”packers” “nfl”), fantasy stats (”joe crede” “priest holmes”), movie times (”movies 92111″), flight times (”swa san jose san diego”) and a beta version of mobile download search. All these services can be accessed via SMS (44636), WAP (http://wap.4INFO.net ), or email to search@4INFO.net.
Why 4INFO instead of Yahoo?
