Bell Experiences 1.8% Increase in Profits

Canada’s largest telecommunications carrier, Bell Canada Enterprises, Inc., has announced a 1.8% increase in second-quarter profits. Although Bell’s number of local and long distance calling customers continued to decline, a large increase in wireless customers significantly boosted overall revenues.

The company’s net income increased to C$581 million (US$479.6 million), from C$571 million during the same period last year. Wireless sales increased by 10%, making for a total of 146,000 mobile phone customers across the country. This impressive improvement in wireless revenues was enough to offset the continued poor performance of Bell’s traditional telecommunications services.

Another area in which the company performed well was DSL (digital subscriber line) high speed internet services. 92,000 new clients subscribed during the second quarter, bringing the total number of Bell DSL customers to over 2,000,000.

After these mixed yet decidedly positive results from Bell, it will be interesting to see how Telus performed last quarter. They are expected to announce earnings on Friday (August 5).
