Google Launches VoIP/Instant Messaging Service
11:42 am on August 24, 2005 | Category: Messaging, VoIP, Web ServicesIt’s official… Google has expanded into the VoIP/instant messaging industry.
As of last night, Google Talk is the newest player in this growing industry and a formidable competitor to the currently dominant Skype service. A service like this is a big jump for Google, to be sure, but with their hugely popular brand name behind them, it shouldn’t be too difficult to carve out a niche in internet communications.
The service allows users to communicate via instant messaging, and also to create free PC-to-PC VoIP connections, similar to those offered by Skype.
So far, VoIP industry experts seem to like what they’ve seen of the service, but say that there are several essential features, including file transfer and conference calling, which still need to be added.
There is obviously still a lot of room for improvement, but all in all, Google Talk seems to be off to a very good start.
