OECD Predicts VoIP Revolution

The telecommunications industry is once again back into profitable territory these days, but landline and mobile providers can’t afford to ignore the increasing popularity of VoIP telephony, warns the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in a new report today.

The research from the OECD, which researches economic trends in 30 leading industrialized countries, predicted that Voice over IP telephony services are the latest innovation set to sweep the telecommunications industry.

“The growing popularity of VoIP threatens the fixed-line revenues of traditional carriers,” the report warns, “especially for international calls.”

The report concludes that landline and wireless phone companies are likely to continue losing customers to the much cheaper and more efficient VoIP telephony services, and that they must better adapt to changing consumer behavior in order to remain competitive.
