Opera Launches Lightweight Mobile Web Browser
12:25 am on August 12, 2005 | Category: Web ServicesThe Norwegian software company Opera, has announced the release of Opera Mini, a lightweight Java web browser compatible with a large selection of cellular phones. It will bring mobile web surfing to millions of less advanced phones, which would not be able to run other, more memory-intensive browsers.
All that’s required to run the software is support for GPRS internet access and the capability to run Java programs. According to its developers, Opera Mini is compatible with the vast majority of WAP-enabled cell phones on the market. It is able to break large webpages into sections for faster, cleaner downloading, and therefore doesn’t require much memory or processing power to operate.
All the standard web browsing features such as bookmarks and history are included, however, more advanced features including Java plug-ins and some client scripting may not function properly. Security may also be a concern for certain users, due to the fact that the connection between the cell phone and the server is not encrypted.
Opera Mini certainly isn’t perfect. It has its limits, but overall, it appears to be a relatively convenient and functional browser for mobile users.
Opera has teamed up with Norway’s TV-2 television network, which is bundling the new software with its mobile phone services. Other, much wider distribution agreements are currently being negotiated, and it may not be long before this browser will be available to customers outside of Norway.
