Sprint-Nextel Merger Gains Government Approval
1:40 am on August 4, 2005 | Category: Business, Wireless, Corporate, RegulationAs expected, the (United States) Federal Communications Commission has voted unanimously in favor of the Sprint-Nextel merger.
Federal regulators came to the conclusion that the merger wouldn’t pose any threat to healthy competition in the wireless telecommunications industry. In fact, the merger could actually help increase competition, threatening the dominance of Sprint’s larger rivals Cingular and Verizon wireless.
“This action will ensure that consumers continue to receive the benefits of wireless competition, such as reduced prices and increased coverage,” FCC Chairman Kevin Martin was quoted as saying. “In addition, consumers can expect improved service quality and more advanced services.”
Now that the merger has been approved by federal authorities as well as all the proper federal authorities, it is virtually guaranteed to go ahead, turning Sprint into the third largest wireless company in the United States.
