Wireless PDA Market Improving
11:19 pm on August 6, 2005 | Category: Business, Mobile Devices, Wireless, PDAsAlthough the market for unconnected PDAs is experiencing definite deflation, those devices with wireless connectivity are seeing much success, according to a research study by Gartner, Inc. The study says that sales of handheld computers (including some with voice capabilities) have increased by 32% over last year.
We need to remember, however, that right now all research on the topic is very circumstantial. Gartner is taking into account all handheld digital computers, including some that have voice communication capabilities. Other research companies, such as IDC, which only includes traditional PDAs, have reported much more negative numbers.
At this point in time, PDAs are going through a transition, as the market shifts from unconnected devices to wireless smart phones, such as the Palm Treo 650. The very device itself is changing, as technology advances, and PDAs and cell phones become more and more integrated. It is to be expected that a transition such as this will cause a fair amount of confusion in the industry.
Gartner’s research study also ranked the current top five manufacturers of PDAs. They were RIM, Palm, HP, Nokia, and T-Mobile, respectively.
