Cingular and RealNetworks to Launch Streaming Video Service
2:15 pm on September 30, 2005 | Category: Business, Telecom ServicesAmerica’s largest wireless company, Cingular Wireless, has agreed to work with RealNetworks to offer streaming video services to subscribers’ mobile phones. This is a major victory for the Seattle-based RealNetworks software group, which is working hard to persuade mobile carriers to adopt it’s streaming media technology.
The alliance between these two companies is a convenient one, due to the fact that Cingular’s arch rival, Verizon Wireless, is already providing a streaming video service, with the support of RealNetwork’s biggest rival, Microsoft.
This is the second such deal for RealNetworks, as they have already signed an agreement with Sprint to provide a similar service to their customers.
The RealNetworks service allows users to access watch video clips on their mobile phones, along with other advanced services, including music and video games. Services such as this offer excellent opportunities to wireless providers who are seeking to boost revenues in order to offset the declining prices of voice calls.
