Google Talk an Attempt to Break Into Pay-Per-Call Advertising?

Ever since Google introduced their new VoIP telephony service, which lacks any great competitive advantage over other similar services, there has been a lot of speculation over their true reasons for the launch.
So far, Google’s business plan has always focused primarily on advertising, and this newest venture could be no exception. Controlling their own online phone network could allow Google to better utilize pay-per-call advertising, which is an advertising method similar to pay-per-click, except that advertisers pay for each customer who contacts them via a special toll-free number that is included in the ad.
Having their own VoIP service will indeed be a great advantage to Google if they are indeed trying to break into this market, as it would allow them to set up unique online “phone numbers†for each advertiser, and efficiently track all activity without depending on another telecommunications network. It certainly seems like the most effective way for them to quickly elevate themselves to a dominant position in pay-per-call advertising, thus creating a very lucrative new revenue stream.
Whether or not pay-per-call really plays a role in Google’s future still remains to be seen, but it seems like it could be the next logical step for them. In short, it’s only pure speculation for now, but it’s still a very interesting theory.
