New Tool Evaluates VoIP Readiness of Corporate IP Networks

As VoIP becomes a more and more viable option for corporate communication, enterprise-level customers are trying to find ways to get a handle on what it takes to support and manage IP telephony networks.

According to Grant Vogelsang of Regina-based SaskTel, the vast majority of IP networks have problems that need to be ironed out before they can handle voice traffic at optimal levels of performance.

A small network management vendor, called Apparent Networks Inc., has just announced that they will be introducing a tool to help enterprises assess the readiness of their networks for VoIP traffic, and fix any problems that could impact service quality.

The AppareNet Enterprise Voice solution is made up of a single server, along with sequencers located at data centers throughout the network. It tests all aspects of the network for quality-of-service faults, and performance problems in switches, routers, and network interface cards, among other errors. It can also be used to monitor high call volumes and evaluate voice quality, without interfering with existing network traffic.

Apparent Networks plans to launch the new tool sometime next week. It will be available to corporate clients for a price of $170,000.
