Nikon Introduces Wi-Fi Cameras
4:25 am on September 2, 2005 | Category: Wireless TechnologyNikon unveiled yesterday what it says are the world’s first built in Wi-Fi-enabled digital cameras to go on the market.
The Coolpix P1 and P2 are able to transmit images to printers or PCs over 802.11b and 802.11g-compatible wireless networks. The two cameras are 8- and 5-megapixels respectively, and weight just 170 grams, with a screen size of 6.35 centimeters.
Although wireless cameras aren’t a new idea (several other models already use bluetooth technology), Nikon’s new devices are the first ones to use built in Wi-Fi technology to do the job.
These new cameras are definitely a notable technical innovation, but whether they will actually catch on is another story. New York Times writer David Pogue believes that the process of actually connecting the cameras to other devices, which involves installing special software and going through a number of setup screens to name the connection, is too technical and jargon laden. He believes that Nikon will have to simplify this process in future versions if they want these new devices to be a hit.
