Palm Expected to Introduce Windows-Based Smartphone

Sources indicate that long time rivals, Microsoft and Palm are getting ready to unveil a smartphone PDA that will run on Microsoft’s software. The new device called the Treo 700, will be offered to customers of Verizon Wireless and will be capable of accessing email and the internet.

Verizon, Palm, and Microsoft all declined to comment on the rumors, but the three companies have issued a press release saying that they will hold a joint news conference in San Francisco this Monday. Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates, is scheduled to attend the conference.

Palm, a pioneer in the PDA market, has struggled in recent years to effectively compete with rivals such as Microsoft and Research in Motion. For some time, however, industry analysts have been predicting an alliance between Palm and Microsoft, resulting in a Windows-compatible model of the Treo PDA. Now it appears that these predictions may soon be coming true…
