RIM to Use Intel Chips in Future Devices
6:03 am on September 29, 2005 | Category: Business, Mobile DevicesPalm’s announcement that they are planning to release a Treo handheld device, which runs on Windows software could be quite a major blow to Research in Motion, and their BlackBerry line of PDAs.
Research in Motion, however, already seems to be trying to generate additional excitement about their own products. The company’s announcement on Tuesday revealed that they would be using Intel chips in future mobile devices. One reason for telling us this now may be to prevent further decreases in RIM’s stock price, which is already ailing due to patent litigation.
So far, most BlackBerry devices have been intended primarily for email and text messaging use. The plans to use Intel’s technology, however, suggests that RIM may be getting ready to release more powerful mobile devices, that will be more complicated, and serve as true smartphones. With their established brand, and good reputation, a high-end smartphone from RIM would have a good chance of doing well.
