Rogers and Bell Team Up to Bring Wireless Broadband to Canada

4:07 pm on September 20, 2005 | Category: Business, Wireless Technology

Rogers Communications and Bell Canada, major competitors for cable and telephone customers in Canada, are planning to build a wireless broadband network across the country, with the help of Kirkland-based Clearwire.

The network will cost about $200 million (US$169 million) to build, and will equipped to make high speed wireless broadband internet access available to over two thirds of Canadians, within the next three years.

The main reason for the partnership is the fact that the two companies both own shares in Inukshuk Internet, which owns the rights to the broadband spectrum in Canada.

This is very good news for many Canadians, who have been anxiously waiting for increased wireless broadband penetration in the country. Similar plans are being put into practice by Verizon, in the US.
