Skype Works to Encourage Innovation

Internet telephony giant, Skype has plans to launch a new program this fall, which will provide third party software developers with “Skype Certified” logos for software that they develop as an extension of the company’s VoIP offering.

Over the past year, Skype has also launched an API, and a hardware certification program for manufacturers of USB phones and other hardware plug-ins. Lenn Pryor, the manager of the development platform says that the hardware program has certified about 80 products so far.

Although a “small fee” will be charged for hardware certification, the company insists that this is not a money making venture, but simply a way for them to cover basic costs. The program itself is for the purpose of stimulating innovation and making the service better for all users.

Along the same lines is the recent Skype development competition, the winner of which was announced earlier this week. The winning entry came from Jyve, a Canadian company that provides call forwarding and auto responding plug-ins for Skype’s main service.
