Striking Telus Workers Ordered to Stop Harassment

Among rising tensions in the increasing ugly labour dispute between Telus and the Telecommunications Workers Union, British Columbia’s supreme court has passed judgement ordering striking union members to stop “molesting, assaulting, intimidating, obstructing, threatening, or interfering with” those employees who are reporting to work.

This judgement comes as a result of a series of affidavits filed by Telus officials, which record examples of threats, intimidation, and even violence that has resulted from the labour dispute.

The Union has released a statement claiming that they do not condone any threats or acts of violence, but the fact that its happening anyway just show how out of control this strike has become. In many cases, the workers seem to be taking a personal grudge against the company to the point of committing blatant harassment against management and other staff.

Hopefully the new court injunction will help these workers get the message that their right to protest does not allow them to harass people at home and on the job site.

    1. The harassment has actually been going both ways. Managers have been going out to the picket line and, at times, baiting union members into discussions while taping the conversation.

Let’s just hope the latest announcement that the two parties will begin bargaining today actually results in something positive to end this thing.

    2. I’m not saying the managers are perfect either. Strikes have the power to bring out the childish side in almost anyone, but it’s the union that’s been dragging its heals and refusing to talk for the past several weeks.

Anyway, it’s good that the two sides are at least speaking to each other now. No major resolutions are on the horizon just yet, but keep watching TeleClick.ca for more news on the topic.
