UK Start-Up to Launch Internet Telephony Service
2:59 am on September 21, 2005 | Category: Business, VoIPThe British telecommunications start-up, Timico is planning to launch a Skype-style internet telephony service, for business users.
“Skype is a fantastic consumer product, but it is not suitable for business users as it is not secure and the quality of service cannot be guaranteed,†said Mike Webb, the managing director of Timco. “Our aim is to take VoIP beyond the free internet telephone call.â€
Unlike Skype, the Timco service won’t be totally free, but it will be much lower in cast than a traditional telephone line. Prices will start at £5/month (per user) for basic VoIP service, plus additional charges depending on which extra features are used.
Users of the new service will be able to log in from any broadband internet connection (including Wi-Fi), and it is likely to reduce the number of incoming lines needed, allowing for lower network maintenance costs.
The first users of Teleco’s VoIP option will likely be home business owners, who need to keep their costs low, yet still have a business-quality service that is more secure than Skype. There are currently an estimated 1.7 million people in the UK who work from home at least one day a week, which gives Teleco a huge potential market.
The new service will be made available to consumers starting in November, and be extended to mobile phones sometime next year.
