24 Mbps Broadband Service Launched in the UK
12:51 am on October 4, 2005 | Category: VoIP, Web ServicesAt the end of September, service provider Be launched the UK’s first 24 Mbps consumer broadband service.
The new service is priced at £24/month, and is currently only available in London. The high speeds are achieved using ADSL 2+ technology, via Alcatel DSL Access Modules that are being installed by Be in BT exchanges. In less technical terms, this means that not all data being transferred is being squeezed into one line.
The new service is set up to be plug-and-play, which means that users do not log on with a username and password. Instead, the system recognizes the user’s phone line, and automatically logs on to the appropriate account.
Another added bonus is that Be supplies customers with modems, which include dedicated VoIP ports. This will likely encourage more use of consumer VoIP services.

As far as I know, there hasn’t been any official word on that yet, but I’m sure the reach will be expanded eventually if the service is in good demand…
