Cisco Planning VoIP System for Radiotelephones
12:55 am on October 30, 2005 | Category: VoIP, Wireless TechnologyCisco Systems has announced that they are planning a new communication system that will allow for many different types of walkie-talkies and radiotelephones to interoperate via VoIP and SIP.
This technology addresses the problem of emergency personnel being unable to communicate due to lack of equipment compatibility. This was an especially major issue when it came to proper communication between state and local authorities in the recent Gulf Coast hurricane relief efforts.
“Communications interoperability has always been a concern with first responders, going back to the first radios,” said Michael Griffin, of California’s Office of Emergency Services. “There’s a growing realization from public safety experts that we need to look at new technologies.”
Cisco’s new offering called the IP Interoperability and Collaboration System (IPICS) will allow for compatibility between many different communication devices, which normally use seperate networks. It will make it possible push-to-talk radios, digital devices, and Wi-Fi-enabled computers, as well as cellular and analog phones to transmit voice data over a single IP network.
The new system will be rolled out globally over the next six to twelve months, and will likely be welcomed by many different emergency authorities around the world.
