EarthLink Wins Philadelphia Wi-Fi Bid
12:01 am on October 6, 2005 | Category: Business, Wireless TechnologyPhiladelphia has decided on EarthLink to be the provider of the new citywide wireless broadband network, which will be the largest municipal Wi-Fi network in the US.
EarthLink will be setting up the new mesh Wi-Fi network to cover a total of 135 square miles (217 square kilometers), and are expecting to have it up and running by the fourth quarter of 2006.
EarthLink has promised to pay 100% of the cost of building the network, which is a likely reason for the city’s favorable reaction to the bid. Once it is operational, the network’s revenue will be split between EarthLink and the Wireless Philadelphia initiative.
