Ericsson and Rogers Collaborate on High-Speed Mobile Technology

1:35 am on October 15, 2005 | Category: Wireless Technology

Rogers Communications is working with Ericsson Canada to test a new form of high-speed mobile voice, data, and audio/video technology.

The underlying technology is called “Universal Mobile Telephone System High Speed Download Packet Access” (UMTS-HSDPA), and promises to significantly increase mobile data transfer speeds to a potential peak of 14 megabits per second.

The original UMTS technology has already been implemented, and is in wide use outside of North America. HSDPA, however, is an upgrade that allows for the highest data speeds of any 3G technology.

Although exact dates have not yet been set, the companies are expected to launch the speedy new services commercially in Canada sometime next year.

Testing has begun in Canada on two new technologies that promise high-speed multimedia voice, data, audio and video services for cell phones.
