Fraudulent Behavior the Biggest VoIP Security Threat

The VoIP Security Alliance (VoIPSA) has recently reported that the greatest threat to Voice over IP security is the growth of fraudulent and deceptive behavior around the technology.

Many such practices, including unlawful call monitoring, eavesdropping, false caller ID, and denial of service attacks have been known to cause numerous tricky situations for VoIP users and providers alike.

Along with the report, the VoIPSA, which has over 100 member companies, has pledged to do everything in its power to eradicate these kinds of activities. The Alliance has plans to release a framework for addressing this goal sometime later this week.

Although it is clear that VoIP is not yet a perfectly secure way to communicate, neither is any other telecom technology when you think about it. VoIP consortiums and independent providers have made great strides in recent years towards increasing security, and things are improving all the time.

The fact that the VoIP industry is taking a hands-on approach to security will likely make for much better services in the years and decades to come…
