Google Proposes Free Wi-Fi Network In San Francisco

2:06 pm on October 3, 2005 | Category: Web Services, Wireless Technology

Google spokesman, Nate Tyler, has recently confirmed that Google is proposing to provide free Wi-Fi internet access to residents of San Francisco. Google has been publically testing their new Wi-Fi technology in selected locations within the city for the past two weeks.

The 100-page proposal that Google has submitted to San Francisco’s city council stresses the fact that Google Wi-Fi presents an opportunity to make the area a testing ground for a variety of cutting edge location-based services and applications. The service will blanket San Francisco with a free wireless network, and allow users to connect at 300 kbps, which is considerably faster than dialup.

Google’s proposal will only become a reality if it is picked by city council over about 10 similar bids that are currently pending, including one from EarthLink.
