Nintendo to Offer Free Wi-Fi Gaming

2:35 pm on October 6, 2005 | Category: Web Services, Wireless Technology

Nintendo’s US division has just revealed plans for a new service, which will wirelessly link Nintendo DS games across the world.

This new internet service will go online starting on November 14th, and will start off by supporting a small handful of games, including Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime Hunters, Animal Crossing: Wild World, and Tony Hawk’s American Sk8land.

The new service will be free for all Nintendo DS owners; meaning that there will be no charge to wirelessly play supported games over the internet. Nintendo will sell a Wi-Fi USB Connector, for the benefit of households that do not have a wireless router in place. They are also setting up thousands of Wi-Fi gaming hotspots all over the US, and will soon be revealing full details of how users can connect via these hotspots.

This release is just one more example of how wireless communications technology is being used to connect the many entertainment mediums of the world.
