Philadelphia to Build Wireless Broadband Network
1:24 am on October 5, 2005 | Category: Web Services, Wireless TechnologyPhiladelphia has recently come to an agreement with Verizon, Pennsylvania’s primary telephone provider, which will allow the city to build a low-cost wireless broadband network.
Philadelphia CIO, Dinah Neff says that only about 10% of low-income neighborhoods in the area are wired for broadband internet access. The purpose of the new network will be to offer people in these neighborhoods a chance to wirelessly access the internet at broadband speeds. The service will be affordably priced at just $10/month for residential use, and $20/month for businesses.
Several well-known companies have made bids to operate the network, and the city is expected to announce the winner as early as this week. The current front runners are EarthLink and Hewlett-Packard.
