Telephone Companies Attempting to Sabotage VoIP
1:51 am on October 24, 2005 | Category: Business, VoIPA number of phone companies from around the world have recently taken the drastic step of blocking VoIP traffic from being transferred over their lines.
It is obvious that these companies are beginning to see VoIP providers, such as Vonage, as a real threat that has the power to topple the various telecom monopolies set up over recent decades. Voice over IP technology offers numerous benefits over traditional telephone lines, and phone companies are waking up to the fact that this superior technology could become a real problem for them in the future.
Blocking of IP traffic has taken place in several countries across Europe, Asia, and South America, and there is some speculation that it could soon take form in the United States and Canada. Although there are laws prohibiting such blatant actions in the US, there is no shortage of creative ways to restrict IP traffic legally.
If this is intended to be some desperate attempt by traditional telephone providers to stop the growing popularity of VoIP technology, it is a very childish one indeed, and will probably have no long term affect whatsoever. The bottom line is that companies need to innovate with market trends, not fight them.
