Yahoo and Microsoft Create Instant Messaging Partnership

1:48 pm on October 12, 2005 | Category: Business, Messaging, Web Services

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Microsoft and Yahoo, both dominant players in the internet communication industry, are preparing to link together their free instant messaging services to take on market leader AOL, and industry newcomer, Google.

This deal is the first major alliance between the two companies, and will allow users of MSN Messenger and YIM to instantly exchange text messages with each other.

Although this is a big decision for the companies involved, it won’t have much ultimate effect on service usability potential. Users of different messaging systems have been able to communicate seamlessly for some time already, via unified instant messaging systems such as Trillian.
