After four months, and much bickering from both sides, the Telecommunications Workers Union has finally ratified a contract agreement with their employer, Telus.

The workers voted 64% in favor of the new deal, the company said in a newswire yesterday.

The terms of the agreement invlude pay increases of 2% – 2.5% over the next three years, as well as bonus payments based on earnings. These terms officially come into effect today, November 20, and cover a total of about 14,000 unionized workers. The 8200 union members that have been on strike for the past four months will be returning to work during the next two weeks.

Although the union membership is still clearly split, with over a third of voters electing to continue the strike, it will be in the best interests of all workers, management, and customers for all members to take this decision in stride. Let’s hope they are able to see the sense in this generous offer, and once again begin conducting themselves in a productive and professional manner.
