Alltel Snaps up Rural Wireless Carriers
1:06 am on November 20, 2005 | Category: Business, Telecom Services
Alltel Corp, a leader in providing telecom services to rural areas in the US, has reportedly agreed to purchase the privately held cellular provider, Midwest Wireless, at a cost of $1.08 billion.
Midwest Wireless currently serves over 400,000 customers in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
Alltel appears to be interested in using this and similar deals to further expand its share of the rural phone market. It’s last such acquisition was the $4.5 billion purchase of Western Wireless, which took place in the third quarter of this year.
