Cell Phone Signals to Ease Traffic Congestion

Recent proposals about traffic congestion have prompted several states to begin adopting new technologies that monitor traffic conditions by tracking drivers’ cell phone signals.

Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, and Missouri have all expressed interest in the new technology, which could be used to help drivers pinpoint and avoid, major traffic jams and holdups. Such technology has been created and tested by companies such as AirSage and IntelliOne Technologies, both of which are based in Atlanta.

Similar traffic congestion monitoring technology has already been utilized in several other countries, including England, Belgium, and Israel.

There has been some concern that the government could use the technology to violate citizens’ privacy rights, and track their movements. State officials claim that they will only be tracking large clusters of signals, not individual mobile phones, but some privacy advocates are not yet satisfied. Many believe that if this technology can be used for the wrong purposes, it eventually will be.

Perhaps the only safe and amicable solution is to implement the system in such a way that it can’t be used on individual phones, and only receives a signal when there are many phones in a given area…
