Citywide Wi-Fi Network Proposed for Milwaukee
1:40 am on November 7, 2005 | Category: Web Services, Wireless TechnologyA small start-up by the name of Midwest Fiber Networks (MWFN) has put in a bid to build a citywide Wi-Fi network in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, similar to the network being built in Philadelphia.
Although not well-know and virtually unadvertised, MWFN says that they’re dead serious about the plans, and are perfectly willing and able to make the $20 million investment involved. This means that whatever happens, taxpayers won’t ever be on the hook for the cost.
The proposed network will involve the installation of between 25 and 30 wireless transmitters for each of Milwaukee’s 96 square miles. MWFN says that they will easily be able to recoup their investment by leasing the network to internet service providers, which will in turn charge customers for access.
“We’re comfortable with the risk,” said Donna Raffaelli-Meyer, a part owner of the company. “We’re very confident about the financial commitment.”
