Comcast Enters Denver VoIP Market

The VoIP market in the Denver Colorado region will become that much more competitive today, with Comcast rolling out its new Digital Voice service. This move by Comcast is expected to provide a stiff challenge for Qwest’s currently dominant internet phone service.

Comcast’s offering will cost $54.95/month for stand-alone unlimited calling, or $125.39/month, when combined with broadband and standard cable television (80 channels).

Although these prices are somewhat steep for an IP-based phone service, Comcast says that calls are not routed over the public internet, but through a managed high-speed network, which provides certain benefits over standard internet phone technology.

Qwest, however, claims that the competition doesn’t worry them. “We have the experience. We have the reliable network … and we can deliver additional service, functionality and reliability,” said a spokeswoman from that company.

Of course, neither Qwest nor Comcast has been able to pose any great threat to VoIP market leader, Vonage, which offers quality broadband phone service from as little as $14.95/month.
