Mobile Pornography: A Growing Problem
5:01 am on November 19, 2005 | Category: Telecom Services, Mobile Devices
With the ongoing convergence of mobile and video technology, the inevitable problem of mobile pornography has emerged.
The fact is that anybody who possesses a video cell phone, including a child, can quite easily download adult content in a matter of minutes. The problem isn’t limited to cell phones either, with video iPods and other MP3 players offering quick access to so called “iPorn” content.
The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association has suggested the possible solution of a rating system for mobile content, but such a system would merely be a guideline, and wouldn’t be 100% effective by any means.
All parties involved agree that this is a vexing problem, and that a foolproof solution has not yet materialized. In the end, it will almost certainly fall on cell phone and MP3 manufacturers to create some sort of mobile content filtering software to go along with their products.

Can you even buy a cell phone that is not a “video cell phone” but still with all other calling features?

Yes, there are still many low-end models that don’t offer video, and there likely always will be.
The fact is that not everybody needs video capability, but it’s certainly something that’s in demand among younger users.
The issue here is parents wanting to protect their children/teenagers from adult content, without denying them a video phone altogether.
