Motorola Invests in Mobile Fuel Cell Company

Motorola has made a strategic investment in Tekion Inc., a Canadian company that develops batteries and hybrid fuel cells for mobile phones.

Tekion is currently developing a new rechargeable battery pack that includes a Formira*-based fuel cell, along with a normal lithium-ion battery. The premise behind the new technology is that the battery provides power to the electronic device, while being continually recharged by the fuel cell.

The fact that the fuel cell is integrated into the unit successfully eliminates the inconvenience of having to carry around an external-charging device.

For now, this technology is only being tested with satellite phones, but Tekion CEO, Neil Huff claims that it will eventually be compatible with cell phone handsets and portable entertainment devices. The company reportedly hopes to be selling this groundbreaking technology commercially, by 2007.

“Our decision to invest in Tekion was motivated by its cutting-edge technology and experienced leadership in micro fuel cell development,” said Motorola equity investments director, Warren Holtsberg, in a recent statement. The exact terms of the investment were not disclosed.

*Formira is a modified and purified variety of non-flamable formic acid. As a fuel source it is much denser than methanol, and can therefore be used to make much smaller battery packs that actually fit inside cell phones.
