Internet giant, Google, has been given official approval to launch a free citywide Wi-Fi network in its hometown of Mountain View, California.

Local officials have given the go ahead to a five-year agreement with Google, allowing the company to place wireless access points on city-owned telephone and streetlight-poles in order to built the network.

This agreement marks Google’s first official entrance into the wireless networking market, and could bode well for their changes of winning the right to build a much larger network in San Francisco.
