According to a market research study by IDC, Samsung Electronics has recently overtaken Motorola as western Europe’s number two seller of mobile handsets.

Samsung managed to sell an impressive 6.2 million handsets during the third quarter, capturing a 16% share of the market. This is a 100% increase over their sales volume of 3.1 million units during the same period last year, and gives them a slight lead over Motorola’s 15% market share.

In a statement about their recent success, the South Korean handset maker said that “the European market is regarded as having a high resistance to foreign firms, but we managed to succeed there by constantly focusing on premium products.”

Samsung hopes to continue this upward spiral, but they still have a long way to go before catching up with the 36% market share of currently dominant Nokia.
