Skype VoIP Products to Hit RadioShack Store Shelves
1:57 am on November 22, 2005 | Category: Business, VoIP
A newly signed deal with internet telephony giant, Skype will allow RadioShack to begin distributing Skype-certified hardware and software at 3,500 of its retail stores across the United States.
This deal could be a very valuable one for Skype, which was recently acquired by eBay in a $4.1 billion deal. The company’s peer-to-peer VoIP services will now be able to enter a whole new market, and be exposed to American shoppers, who don’t necessarily keep up with the latest internet developments.
In short, the importance of this agreement is that it will enable Skype, and the VoIP industry as a whole, to build a stronger and more mainstream reputation.
Some of the VoIP products that will now be available at RadioShack include the Motorola H500 Bluetooth headset, Logitech’s USB Headset 250, and the Skype-enabled Cordless Internet Telephony Kit from Linksys.
In addition to this, RadioShack will also be offering a “Skype Starter Kit” at a special price of just $4.99 until Christmas Eve. The kit will include the latest version of Skype’s internet telephony software, along with a headset, and 30 minutes of worldwide calling time for the popular SkypeOut VoIP service.
“RadioShack is known for helping make the market for new technologies, and by all indicators Skype is poised to resonate with U.S. customers after experiencing huge success overseas,” said RadioShack’s senior vice president, Jim Hamilton. “Customers should love how they can cut their phone bill without cutting their phone line, making unlimited free calls to other Skype users around the world.”
