America’s largest prepaid wireless provider, TracFone Wireless, has decided to offer a special freebie to eligible Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

The FCC and FEMA approved the plan last month, to provide a free cellular service package to those displaced from their homes as a result of the catastrophic hurricane. The package includes a new cell phone, 300 minutes of airtime, and a battery and charger, all at no cost.

“A significant number of people were impacted by this disaster and many of them were our customers,” said TracFone Wireless CEO, FJ Pollak. “It’s our goal to offer support to the evacuees during this time of need by providing a wireless phone to ease their communication problems so they can begin to rebuild their lives. This grant, provided by the FCC, is a good example of governmental agencies working with corporate America to help those less fortunate during hardships.”

The company has set up a toll free number to determine eligibility for the free package, and can be contacted at 1-800-800-9873.

Actions like this allow TracFone to provide help to customers in need, build brand loyalty, and strengthen their reputation as the nation’s leading provider of cheap prepaid cell phones.

    1. I like the idea of TracFone offering Free Cell Phones to Hurricane Katrina evacuees. More Cell Phones Companies need to jump on the Bandwagon & do the same thing, not only for Hurricane Evacuees, but for people that have had other Natural & possibly man-made Disasters Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Floods, Fire etc.

    2. There are still so many people left homeless and jobless from this storm. People are living in tents and need all the help that humanity can offer. Thank you for doing your part to ease some of their suffering and worries. I hope more companies will follow suit.

    3. This is a great idea. I’m currently living in New Orleans so we need a lot of help. But this is asking for way too much paperwork and information. It’s bad enough that our important files were swept away—now we have to go digging around for what we may or may not still have. It’s just too much.

    4. How wonderful and generous TracFone is for offering this to the hurricane victims! You are truly a company that understands compassion and the spirit of Christmas! Thank you for setting an example that other corporations in America would do well to follow.

    5. Very generous, however, way too much information to provide to even make it worthwhile.

    8. So far as I know, this particular offer is only for those who are still homeless because of Katrina damage.

But if you’re interested in other potential TracFone assistance programs, it’s definitely worth aksing them about it.

    11. I’m curious as to how much of this was subsidized by the federal grant? Perhaps it is not Tracfone who needs to be thanked, but the American taxpayers. Does anyone know the numbers? Was it 100% fed? Tracfone gets to look like a good citizen, but how much did it really cost them?

    12. i am too from new orleans and i recieved a tracfone from the company but am having so many problems just getting the promised minutes. Every time i call i am on the phone an hour or more and they are telling me that it looks like the phone that they sent me was purchased from walmart but i recieved the phone straight from tracfone with the katrina letter and everything through fed ex about a month ago and still havent gotten the minutes i am now living in louisville ky and they told that the phone probably hadnt been reprogrammed since it is a reconditioned phone and that they would send the problem to their resolutions department and on the 18 of this month will make a whole month since i have been waiting on a response back from them. So i wont thank them until i have recieved the minutes that was promised and maybe some extra minutes for all the trouble i have had to go through with faxing them my information all over again and everything
