US Government Concerned about RIM Lawsuit
1:59 am on November 12, 2005 | Category: Business, Mobile Devices, LawThe American government has expressed concerns regarding the ongoing patent infringement case against Ontario-based Research in Motion, and its popular BlackBerry mobile computing device.
The Department of Justice has actually said that the nation’s political, business, and security affairs could be harmed if Virginia-based NTP succeeds in forcing RIM to halt the sale of the BlackBerry within US borders.
“The injunction would literally prevent RIM from providing the services that would be essential for the federal government, as well as state and local governments, to continue their use of the BlackBerry devices,” the Department claimed in a court filing. It is clear that this could become a major issue, due to the fact that as many as 200,000 federal employees currently use the devices to access email when away from their offices.
Whether this government interjection could actually tip the scales in the case is hard to say, but it certainly provides new hope for RIM and its shareholders.
