Verizon DSL Speeds Could Soon Double
1:53 am on November 29, 2005 | Category: Web Services
Verizon Communications is currently conducting tests of a new DSL service, which could more than double the current download speeds for residential broadband customers in the US.
DSL is a technology that transfers data at high speeds over ordinary copper telephony lines. Despite it’s “old fashioned†nature, Digital Subscriber Line services have consistently proven to be an impressively fast and reliable way to transfer data.
Verizon’s latest tests are only strengthening this reputation, and will allow for possible residential DSL download speeds as fast as 7.1 megabits per second.
Although the company is also working on an even-faster fiber optic broadband technology called FiOS, many analysts predict that they will first roll out the super-fast DSL offering. This is due to the fact that fiber optic networks aren’t yet large enough for wide FiOS availability.
In the long term, it’s probably a better business move for Verizon to boost DSL speeds as soon as possible, in order to compete more effectively against cable broadband rivals, such as Comcast. This will allow the company to maintain a better customer retention rate while increasing the reach of its fiber optic network.
