3G Providers Offering Cellular Broadband for Laptops

When doing business on the move, depending on a library or coffee shop Wi-Fi network certainly isn’t the ideal situation. Fortunately, there is a new wireless broadband solution that can you enjoy outside the confines of a hotspot.
Various cell phone companies are working to make 3G cellular broadband connections usable with laptop computers, via a special cellular modem card.
Cingular’s new 3G network – the first ever to offer simultaneous voice and data transmission capability – offers download speeds of up to 700 Kbps. Unlimited use of the service is available at a cost of $80/month.
Prior to this, Sprint had already launched a 3G broadband service using the EV-DO mobile data network, which it plans to upgrade (and make even faster) sometime late next year.
Verizon’s network also offers a laptop-compatible mobile broadband service, but it’s a little slower, with transfer speeds comparable to those of a regular DSL connection.
Although 3G coverage isn’t available everywhere, it’s a lot more wide-range than Wi-Fi, with networks available or soon to be available in most major US cities. Even outside of the 3G-coverage area, the cellular modem will continue to function, but it will only be able to download over a normal GMS network, and thus be much slower.
