America’s biggest mobile carrier, Cingular Wireless, has launched its new high-speed 3G-wireless network in 16 cities today.

This makes Cingular the last of the three US wireless giants to launch a 3G network, but the first to launch one based on HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology.

The new network, which the company plans to expand rapidly in the coming year, is designed to make mobile data access, as fast as wired broadband connections. It is expected to service 35 million people in 52 American cities by the end of 2006.

“Make no mistake about it,” said Cingular CEO, Stan Sigman. “Wireless users want the speed and services they’ve come to expect from their wired connections.”
