CRTC Rules in Favor of Cell Phone Number Portability
6:06 am on December 21, 2005 | Category: Telecom Services
The CRTC, Canada’s main telecom regulator, ruled yesterday that mobile phone carriers would soon be required to allow customers to keep their existing phone numbers when switching to rival plans.
This decision will take effect on March 14, 2007, and is intended to make it easier for customers to switch wireless providers and get the best deal, without the inconvenience of changing phone numbers.
In theory, making it easier to switch carriers will give carriers more incentive to provide good customer service and competitive pricing, ultimately benefiting consumers.
“This decision establishes the earliest feasible date for wireless number portability consistent with a smooth and reliable transition,” said CRTC Chairman, Charles Dalfen in a statement.
