Google has recently taken the step of extending their popular web mail solution, GMail, to mobile phone users, including most of the same features that could be accessed from a computer.

One of the nicest things about GMail Mobile is its ability to detect what kind of device you’re using, and automatically change its settings according. For example, the screen resolution settings would automatically enlarged for a wide-screen smartphone PDA, over a small cellular handset.

The service is available through a wide variety of phones, and can be accessed by typing “m.gmail.com” into your mobile web browser. One drawback is that the service is, for now, only accessible to US users, but it will likely be extended in the future, assuming that its performance is good.

With the ability to download attachments in a wide variety of formats, and even make phone calls to people on your email contacts list, GMail mobile has a lot of potential to become just as popular on cell phones as it is on computers.
