IM Virus Poses as Windows Live Messenger BETA Invitation

4:25 am on December 29, 2005 | Category: Messaging, Web Services

Finnish security firm, F-Secure has issued a warning against a recent scam promoting phony Windows Live Messenger BETA invitations.

The fake instant messages claim that “Messenger 8 BETA has been leaked,” and encourage users to click a link that will supposedly allow them to download the not-yet-released instant messenger.

Instead, the link actually installs a Trojan by the name of “Virkel.f,” which causes infected PCs to spread spam email, and launch DoS (denial-of-service) attacks against websites. Furthermore, the virus shuts down security software programs, and blocks access to security vendor websites, making it very difficult to get rid of.

Virkel.f spreads itself by sending instant messaging spam to people on the IM contacts lists of infected users.

The statement from F-Secure warns users to ignore such instant messages, and be careful not to click the associated links.
