Nokia has recently altered its predictions regarding the mobile phone industry, claiming that the world will have a total of 3 billion cell phone subscribers by the end of 2008.

Previous predictions called for this milestone to be reached in 2010, but Nokia believes that 2008 is now a realistic target, due to faster-than-expected growth in emerging markets. The bulk of the industry’s growth over the next few years is expected to take place in India, Africa, Russia, Eastern Europe, and most notably of all, China.

If these predictions hold firm, Nokia likely stands to gain a lot from the coming explosion of growth. After all, the company now controls 33% of the world’s handset market, and seems to have quite a knack for creating the kind of entry-level phones that sell well in emerging markets.
