PDA manufacturer, Palm Inc. announced on Tuesday that its profits have surged in recent months, as a result of new agreements with carriers, and increased shipments of web-enabled smartphones.

The company’s total profits were $260.9 million during the second fiscal quarter, which ended on December 2nd. This amounts to earnings of $5.02 per share, a significant increase over the same period last year.

It is important to remember that these figures were bolstered by a larger-than-usual tax credit to the tune of $224.2 million, but the increase in Palm shipments does appear to raise optimism for the future of the handheld computing industry.

By creating more smartphones and other voice and internet enabled devices, Palm is doing quite a good job of avoiding the recent decline in demand for personal organizers. The seem to have learned that integrating the practical applications of voice and web access is a sure way to keep up with the evolving market for mobility.
