A common consensus among consumers seems to be that universal remote controls are more trouble than they’re worth. Phillips’ new RC9800i device, however, may be an exception.

The key thing that’s different about this simple and powerful unit would have to be its ability to group commands according to activity, rather than according to device. The RC9800i makes it possible for users to control multiple audio and video devices with a single command.

For example, a user could simply press a single “Play DVD” button, and automatically turn on the DVD player, turn on the television, and play a DVD.

Other advantages of this useful audio/video controller include its convenient touchscreen interface, built in Wi-Fi connectivity, and downloadable TV programming guide.

The RC9800i doesn’t come cheap, with a price tag of $599, but for the avid audio/video gadget user, it could certainly be a worthwhile purchase.
