Sources have revealed that British cable giant, NTL is in talks to purchase Virgin Mobile, and create a unified television, telecommunications, and mobile phone company, under the Virgin brand name.

Billionaire tycoon, Richard Branson, who owns about 72% of Virgin Mobile, would reportedly trade his interest in the company for shares of NTL. This would make him NTL’s biggest shareholder, with a stake of approximately 14%.

If the deal goes through, the combined telecom giant would likely offer “quadruple play” voice, broadband, cable TV, and mobile service, allowing for more effectively competition against “triple play” rivals.

Although neither company has released any comment on the talks yet, they are expected to make an official announcement about the merger later today (Monday).
